That is just great. Wow. But I bet the flap vortex is a larger version of it which entrains the outside, less powerful vortex. No gratitude, that's me...

...but it isn't the whole picture, as you've pointed out.

Cairenn, basic rocket science is dead simple. But applied rocket science, especially to high-power pumping and cryogenics, combustion chamber stability, and vibration, hydraulics, sensors?

    Er...let's look at the weather...

It never is what you see.

The weather is so complex. That Dallas tornado in 57 is what got me interested in weather. It touched down about a half mile from us, and I saw it, too up close and personal and the damage from it.

Just wanted to add this photo to the discussion as the full wing aerodynamic contrail demonstrates the vortex sheet, and the rolling up of that sheet, very nicely

That is so cool. You can see the aerodynamic trail forms above the wing. The fin is sticking out of it clean and clear, but the tailplane is lost within it.

I think the amazing part is the amount of energy it requires to sustain that cloud. All the air that has to be pushed down to create such a vacuum. But it makes sense- that plane weighs more than 350000 pounds all up. So you have to manipulate 350000 pounds of air to keep it flying.
