I think it would be difficult to keep the drone centred in the theodolite. It would be easy to have it maintain a fixed altitude above the sea, but that would of course result in it dropping below the crosshairs as it went away. You'd need some pretty skillful flying.

I don't think there's any evidence of that from the videos we have seen. It looks to me far more like some very out-of-focus images that could be anything at all. They look far more like blurred reflections of some sort than any physical object.

That doesn’t mean anything. The ground shape in Google Earth is taken from digital terrain models, so any object, no matter how high, will appear to be draped on the ground. (See the example I posted upthread with a plane appearing to fly down the side of a mountain.)

How about this stunt plane captured in Austria? ;) Planes being captured in flight are a pretty common sight on Google Earth.
