Identifying a plane over San Francisco [B99988 - Gulfstream GL650]

According to this site, the Gulfstream B-99988 was only delivered (to its new Taiwanese owner) on 21 March this year. http://corporatejetinvestor.com/articles/2016-business-jet-delivery-tracker-698/

They've been brought over to the UK for dogfight practice. 13 APRIL 2016 • 4:18PM RAF jets will battle American stealth fighters in mock dogfights over Britain for the first time in the coming days. British Typhoon fighters will take part in air-to-air combat drills against United States Air...

The Rush to Explain an Illusion with Train Track Pieces - Jastrow AND Perpective

The crazy thing is that even with the line drawn on there, the bottom piece still looks bigger!

"An Unconventional Shade of Grey" - Michael J. Murphy new Film

Yes, yet another grand plan comes to nothing. Either these people are totally incompetent or they know that producing a proper test would provide negative results and kill the golden goose. I have my suspicions...

Paul Beckwith (climate scientist) on chemtrails

This was from the University of Wyoming weather sounding page: http://weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding.html Choose "GIF: Skew-T" under "Type of plot". The tropopause is marked by the point at which the temperature line (right-hand thick line) starts heading back to the right. The example I...

Paul Beckwith (climate scientist) on chemtrails

Correct for the second reason, but not for the first (IMHO). Plenty of passenger jets fly in the stratosphere. This week I have been looking at the soundings and the tropopause has been comfortably below 30,000 feet over the UK. For instance see this one from Camborne a couple of days ago. The...

The Rush to Explain an Illusion with Train Track Pieces - Jastrow AND Perpective

So, I tried it at home with the curves the other way up. The illusion still works but is much less dramatic. Video is attached, converted to GIF and (hopefully) embedded below as well.

The Rush to Explain an Illusion with Train Track Pieces - Jastrow AND Perpective

Faking it quickly in Photoshop by using the perspective warp, it seems the illusion still works, even when the "bottom" piece is further away, and thus actually smaller on the image: Moving the image of the top piece, which (to me at least) still appears to be bigger, onto the lower one:

The Rush to Explain an Illusion with Train Track Pieces - Jastrow AND Perpective

I agree that perspective makes the nearer piece bigger on screen, but normally our brains account for perspective, so that two similar objects appear the same size to us even if one is forming a larger image on our retinas. For example, there is no illusion here, even though the nearer pen is...

Photos of Planes and Contrails (That you took yourself)

Just looking at this in a bit more detail. The Relative Humidity map at 300mb for the time in question would normally suggest that persistent contrails would be rather unlikely, with RH on the low side (my location marked with the red dot). However, here is the sounding for Herstmonceux, on...

Debunked: Triton Artificial Gills (Indigogo Campaign)

I just looked at the Whois info for that site. It is registered in the name of Jaebyun Yeon, but the address info is not genuine: Kangnam-gu simply refers to a district of Seoul (as immortalised in "Gangnam Style" :) ), but the postal code, 427-736, is not related to that area, or even to...

Photos of Planes and Contrails (That you took yourself)

A classic "tic tac toe" pattern this morning: The trails in both directions were quite short and perfectly placed to cross from my vantage point. Looking at FR24, it was clear that they were also very low. What was happening was that planes departing Stansted and flying south (right to left...

Photos of Planes and Contrails (That you took yourself)

I posted this shot before. This was probably about 2,000ft below the contrail (crossing flight was at FL380, we had recently started descending from the same level). Later we actually passed right through an older dispersed trail. These are grabs from a video, it's quite hard to make out...

Photos of Planes and Contrails (That you took yourself)

A layer of thin cloud is making some quite dramatic contrail shadows this morning. This one just now was Air Canada 881 from Paris to Toronto, a Boeing 777 at 32,000ft. (Plus a bonus BA flight heading in to land at LHR.)
