You can use the Occulars plugin to simulate a camera/lens setup, it's usually used for telescopes and astro imaging CCDs but you could probably work out how to approximate an iPhone

IIRC it depends on the dust spot size relative to the circle of confusion, but from experience these look exactly like dust spots on the sensor, the smaller the aperture the more solid and more noticeable they get.

It's more likely dust on the sensor, lens dust does not show up that much even on the rear element

My guess is bird poop as you suggest or maybe an insect. I have fortuitously captured insects with birds before eg: What we do know is it is in the same focal plane as the birds and thus small, as the birds will not be at the hyperfocal distance of a telephoto at 500mm and f/5.5? (f/5.6..)...

I think it's both, they are aligned somewhat. But a few alignments fit.

Some quick math on the camera used with the pixel count from the full size image gives a very ballpark figure of 0.86 metres away for the butterfly, the image is pretty wide angle 14mm FF equivalent according to the EXIF in the 1st post. American Snout approx wingspan 2 inches, 1 wing = 1 inch...
