I suspect that we are on the right track either way I am always surprised a bit when I see movie recreations behind the scenes, often simpler things are way more effective than we expect.

The saucer looking so similar to a blue 'Le Creuset' style enamelled cast iron pan lid is what makes people think it's likely practical effects for the object at least. Maybe not but it does seem an odd choice to so closely recreate that specific shape.

Then you posit a physical mode of a wing recreated for the video against a blue-sky backdrop, rather than a video of a wing from a 737 window? That does add more complexity to the artifice.

Any recreation needs to take into account the object going behind the wing, if a fake this indicates some level of compositing however it was performed.

The issue is going to be The original footage filmed on some camera, then the 'fake' version filmed on another camera and then each of the cameras having the footage possibly cropped. But yeah the focus issues point to 2 cameras, one for plane footage and then another filming that footage

It depends, if they are a simulated adversary then probably they wouldn't if that was the parameters of the exercise. Alphas assertions are all based on the normal track sharing and IFF systems that would normally be in place for friendly aircraft sharing the same airspace, but of course...

A good question that has been asked before, there are a lot of little discrepancies between the stories and the videos. This is but one. Maybe it's possible that something pure white looks dark under certain conditions and/or settings on the camera, it seems unlikely to me but maybe possible...
