NYT: GIMBAL Video of U.S. Navy Jet Encounter with Unknown Object

Navy F/18 only has ATLFIR and LITENING and we are told by TTSA these are ATFLIR and the UI matches the ATFLIR pods. Also news articles indicate Navy uses ATFLIR on the F/18 https://www.flightglobal.com/us-navy-stays-with-raytheon-pods/43720.article The SNIPER on the F/16 Chris flew might be...

F-16 Pilot Chris Lehto's Interpretation of the GoFast footage [Focus, Parallax, Inaccurate Range]

Planes at cruising altitude are not that big/detailed even a A380 on my crop sensor with 400mm, the moon isn't the issue, it's getting the plane that big. However those planes in the shots may have been on approach/egress from an airport and thus lower.

NYT: GIMBAL Video of U.S. Navy Jet Encounter with Unknown Object

Well yeah took me 30 secs to find, but it is helpful if people can do some looking themselves 11. ATFLIR SYSTEM. 12. The pod adapter unit is installed on the left fuselage at weapon station 4. The pod can be installed or removed to be compatible with the aircraft mission requirements. This...

F-16 Pilot Chris Lehto's Interpretation of the GoFast footage [Focus, Parallax, Inaccurate Range]

I imagine it's probably one of the big Canon primes 5/6/800mm on an extender like the Canon 2x then cropped in post. You can get 1000/1200mm at f/8 or 1600mm at f/11 with this setup. These are £8000-13,000 lenses.

Sphere, Acorn, Metallic Blimp - Three iPhone Photos From an F-18 via Mystery Wire

Yeah I mentioned this earlier on in the thread, I think it got skipped over a bit though. The balloon would be flying towards the plane as well with a head wind.

Gimbal distance and Speed Range Estimates using Lines of Bearing and/or DCS

It's DCS it's 60 UK pounds for the f/18 pack. I'm fairly close to picking it up at this point I've read enough ATFLIR manuals I can probably use it from memory. However it's only recently the ATFLIR was added though and not all the features we see in the videos are in, in fact it's quite telling...

Sphere, Acorn, Metallic Blimp - Three iPhone Photos From an F-18 via Mystery Wire

We know it's from an iPhone 8 because we got the original images and it's in the exif. Luckily we got 2 photos taken very close together where the object increases in size. The main debate is based on the fact that if we assume the object is the batman balloon then it is a certain size which...

Sphere, Acorn, Metallic Blimp - Three iPhone Photos From an F-18 via Mystery Wire

Actually the banking is a good spot, if the plane is not flying directly towards the object the the airspeed and the closing speed will be different allowing a plane speed that wont stall and a closing speed that matches the balloon size theory.

You can see something similar to Gimbal in the photo of the sun, on the left hand side the glare around the sun extends outward somewhat to the left.

Sphere, Acorn, Metallic Blimp - Three iPhone Photos From an F-18 via Mystery Wire

Yeah the balloon is such a shape match for the acorn object, I can't really see it being anything else. But it would be nice to be able to show the plane could go slow enough for the numbers to match based on the photos. But there may be too many unknown factors (altitude/F18 loadout etc.)...

F-16 Pilot- Chris Lehto analyses Gimbal footage

What the general public call a drone is basically a remote controlled quadcopter, the US military as you pointed out has drones (UAV/UAS) that are basically full sized aircraft. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Grumman_RQ-4_Global_Hawk https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Grumman_X-47B...

Andrea Themely, Former Air Force Pilot, Breaks Down UFO Footage

I guess, is this level of engagement new/different? At the moment it's is mostly a huge appeal to authority, but what prompts former military service people to jump in feet first repeating the same talking old points but with huge apparent authority. First we had Fravor/Underwood, then Dietrich...

That is mostly true but only for images without bright light sources in them, scratches/smudges on front elements are generally not that impactful on the basic image, the problem is when you have a bright light source, i.e. non reflected light or very bright highlights, but mainly direct light...
