Poll : Which DOD Navy video do you consider debunked ?

Well these videos are interesting because they come from the military, with testimonies/stories by military personnel (Nimitz for FLIR, all the recent talk of fighter pilots seeing UFOs routinely for GoFast/Gimbal). Whatever you believe is behind them (UFO/pilot errors/government...

F-16 Pilot Chris Lehto's Interpretation of the GoFast footage [Focus, Parallax, Inaccurate Range]

I think what he's saying is they can be in approximate focus depending on the depth of field. His point is that the depth of field being narrow in GoFast, if the object was at 13000 ft between the ocean and the plane, the ocean would be more blurry than that. I'm more interested in the 2nd...

F-16 Pilot Chris Lehto's Interpretation of the GoFast footage [Focus, Parallax, Inaccurate Range]

This part of the forum has been very quiet lately, here is some new material by Chris Lehto (a retired fighter pilot) about GoFast : Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVVGxNNMgd8 I watched it quickly, but it seems his two main arguments are that : - the ocean is too much in focus during...

F-16 Pilot- Chris Lehto analyses Gimbal footage

The ad hominem attacks through Youtube videos are getting embarrassing, on both sides...

FLIR Technician Discusses Navy videos and claims to refute Mick's claims

I'll have to look into the thread on this again, but do we know what is the field of view of the instrument in that case ? Is the instrument comparable to the one used in the Gimbal video ?

FLIR Technician Discusses Navy videos and claims to refute Mick's claims

Well if you listen carefully he says there can be glare in a FLIR camera, but only with a wide angle of view, not with a narrow one like in the Gimbal footage. It sounds like it's really important to compare what's comparable when discussing what's going on with this type of optics (the video...

2004 USS Nimitz Tic Tac UFO FLIR footage (FLIR1)

Since I have done it for the two other Navy videos, I decided to make a little geometric analyses of FLIR (for the sake of fun mostly!). Two parameters are measured by my model : - the average speed of the TicTac when it's locked, from second 0'09 to 1.09. I use the angles of bearing given by...

"GO FAST" Footage from Tom DeLonge's To The Stars Academy. Bird? Balloon?

@Leonardo Cuellar , yes that's the one I'm using, between 0'05 and 0'07. A user had looked at each frame and counted 1.8sec for the object to cross the FOV, based on frame rate.

"GO FAST" Footage from Tom DeLonge's To The Stars Academy. Bird? Balloon?

Thanks Leonardo. Yes this is exactly what I'm trying to do here. Because without locking (snowplow pointing mode?) the camera angles do not change (or not much), the speed of GoFast can be estimated from the time it takes to cross the field of view. And for a given altitude of GoFast, knowing...

"GO FAST" Footage from Tom DeLonge's To The Stars Academy. Bird? Balloon?

I agree with the fact that we are missing some critical data to give any strong conclusion here (the wind shear especially). But if using different methods, we find convergence in the results, that would suggest the results are not so off. I went back reading earlier posts from this thread, and...

"GO FAST" Footage from Tom DeLonge's To The Stars Academy. Bird? Balloon?

@Todd Wasson, I just had a quick exchange with a military pilot on Reddit, here is what he says about the range in GoFast : "I can tell you that lasing anything is NOT allowed for routine encounters. You’d need to be legit targeting something for that to be allowed. So it makes sense that the...

"GO FAST" Footage from Tom DeLonge's To The Stars Academy. Bird? Balloon?

Indeed the trajectory of the plane has to be accounted to retrieve meaningful results. Considering a straight trajectory for the plane will put you way off. The fact that the plane and GoFast are not at the same altitude is important too, so the calculations are more accurate when building a 3D...

Gimbal distance and Speed Range Estimates using Lines of Bearing and/or DCS

On the other hand the difference of angles between our final lines of bearing are ~3°. Just the one second with no turn of rate at the beginning of your simulation + slightly less turn of rate between PT2 and PT3 could explain that difference.

Gimbal distance and Speed Range Estimates using Lines of Bearing and/or DCS

@MclachlanM Comparing more closely your lines of bearing with mine, clearly you have a less curvy trajectory, that makes them close to parallel. That does not quite fit the geometry in my model, neither the one of Marcus shown above. Here is a video with your bank angles overlaid with the real...

Gimbal distance and Speed Range Estimates using Lines of Bearing and/or DCS

I recreated your Gimbal trajectory in my GeoGebra model, using the angle from the vertical (~31deg) and the distance to the fighter (almost constant at 12.9 Nm). Our Gimbal trajectories diverge after PT2 (0'11). This is the difference between a normal trajectory, and an odd one. I still cannot...

Gimbal distance and Speed Range Estimates using Lines of Bearing and/or DCS

Wait, do you use True Air Speed (~360 knots) or the calibrated air speed given on the screen? We have to use True Air Speed here.

Gimbal distance and Speed Range Estimates using Lines of Bearing and/or DCS

Yes that's an awesome way to look at it. What's the blue line, it represents the rate of turn right ? Are your bearing angles calculated from that line, or the purple one ? A trajectory not too far from this could be found in my model, or the one of Marcus, around 12Nm, but Gimbal would have to...

Poll : Which DOD Navy video do you consider debunked ?

Hey I don't keep changing the definition, after you first comment I added a sentence in bold in post #1 to clarify what I meant : By debunked, I mean do you think there is a solid conventional, earthly, explanation for the footage ? (and I don't mean solid like a rock ok :)) This is an...

Poll : Which DOD Navy video do you consider debunked ?

Yes that's why what we means by debunked is important. The aspects of the video that have been pushed to the general public are questionable, or even wrong : GoFast being close to the water, FLIR accelerating like hell at the end of the video, Gimbal rotating ... But there are much more...

Poll : Which DOD Navy video do you consider debunked ?

I've added the None option (my vote :p) but like I said if GoFast was an independent event I would consider it as debunked. This poll is just to have a bit of fun and see where we are in terms of consensus on this forum.
