    Claim: Original Calvine UFO Photo

Yeah, not that low. I've been atop valley ridges in England and seen military planes way down there. Civil twilight is around 10.10pm at Calvine for August 4th. Dark comes long and slow at those latitudes. Doesn't seem unreasonable to me (as someone who grew up in the north of England). But...

Calvine UFO Photo - Reflection In Water Hypothesis

The thing about the reflection hypothesis is that means the photographers were lying about what they saw and photographed and therefore there's no reason to believe what they said about the location. Other hoax hypothesis: the photo was taken somewhere in England, hence why there's a Harrier in it.

    Claim: Original Calvine UFO Photo

Ah. Took me so long to get the pictures I didn't even notice the delete. :D

I don't think that could be related to the plane, it's just a small strip of grass.

Calvine UFO Photo - Reflection In Water Hypothesis

If the plane is reflected in the water why is it out of focus? Or is that considered as motion blur?

    Claim: Original Calvine UFO Photo

Yeah, just thinking that. And if the fog obscured everything but the peak - therefore some incredibly heavy fog - why are we able to see the plane, the sky and the clouds?

Just looking to see if I can find the coordinates now. Looks like somewhere around 56.76127078349055, -3.9808696741626592. Farragon Hill may be a candidate for the peak. Seems like the highest one in that general direction.

Wow. That's a tremendously good match. Do you have the link to the reddit thread?

    Claim: Original Calvine UFO Photo

It's interesting to me that before the photo surfaced David Clarke believed it was a hoax. Now that he's seen the picture he's thinking it's some sort of secret US craft: When I last published an update on this story I concluded it must be a hoax. But now I am convinced the Calvine UFO...

Calvine UFO Photo - Reflection In Water Hypothesis

I think it looks even less like a reflection with a bit of colour added. Nope. But if I was forced to I think I could suggest several more plausible explanations.

    Claim: Original Calvine UFO Photo

I haven't read anything where it says the photos were sold. That's very speculative and not in accordance with the story that's out there. Well, yes, these things happen. Lots more speculation. But who knows? Now that the picture's out there perhaps the original photographers will come...

I feel like this colorized version helps pour some cold water on the reflection hypothesis:

Calvine UFO Photo - Reflection In Water Hypothesis

Yes, that's true. This surviving photo may be the best one of the object but perhaps the others showed more detail of the plane.

    Claim: Original Calvine UFO Photo

Apparently the name and address were "doodled" by Craig Lindsay and have no significance (according to David Clarke). One other discrepancy to note: according to Nick Pope the photographers reported a low humming sound (which was reported yesterday in The Sun) whereas Lindsay says they told him...

Calvine UFO Photo - Reflection In Water Hypothesis

I wonder why the MoD stated they were "confident that aircraft is a Harrier"? Is there really enough detail to make that out, and to eliminate other planes (especially given no Harriers operating in the area at the time)?

    Claim: Original Calvine UFO Photo

PS If anyone's curious about the upside down name and address they're of a journalist (died in 2015) who worked for the Edinburgh Evening News. Makes me wonder if maybe the photos weren't originally sent to a smaller newspaper first?

Calvine UFO Photo - Reflection In Water Hypothesis

According to David Clarke's article in the Daily Mail they finished work, drove about 13 miles north along the A9 to Calvine, and then went for a walk in the hills. They hadn’t gone far when they saw a huge, solid, diamond-shaped object, about 100ft long, hovering silently in the sky above...

    Claim: Original Calvine UFO Photo

According to David Clarke here: 1. The photographer sent the negatives to the newspaper 2. The newspaper sent them to the RAF 3. The MoD had them printed 4. They returned the negatives to the newspaper 5. Neither the newspaper nor the MoD retained the negatives According to his article in the...

Calvine UFO Photo - Reflection In Water Hypothesis

My twopenneth against reflection: 1. It doesn't look like a reflection 2. The "rock" isn't close to perfectly mirrored 3. A barb wire fence directly next to a loch (or even a pond) seems unlikely
