@MapperGuy Good points, this was exactly what I was referring to. Radiometry is pretty cool, but absolute radiometry is something else altogether.

The "window of constant angular size" works only at larger distances, meaning the ratio (measure) aperture and distance is large. This is because the cosine error is very small. But if you measure objects at shorter proximity, this is no longer correct radiometrically.

I get a little nervous when some try to mix up photo detectors behaviour and (absolute) radiometry.

I think the images are SWIR (short wave IR), and this means it is sensitive to both non-thermal IR and thermal IR.

If he was subject to radiation and causing burns, it is quite unlikely it is visible directly after it happened. Here in this link it is discussed. Sounds to me highly unlikely his burns were caused by radioactivity. The "hot air jet" sounds even more unlikely as you cannot get these defined...
