I looked up the optical design, perhaps of interest. Looks to me like a complex design (5 moving groups), and perhaps could be vulnerable to small mis-alignments? Perhaps that can cause the aberrations? Hmmm.. not sure though.. source...

I had the exact same reaction. Looks much higher. But also I don't have calibrated eyes.

100% astigmatism ie distortion of the wavefront. The more point-like the source, the flatter the wavefront, and thus the most easy to get influenced by non perfect refractive elements. The window is the culprit imo.

The static pixels are noise/hot pixels. The grouped lights are very likely squid boats. I had a tough time convincing folks on Reddit that the camera was NOT looking at space, but at Earth. "But why do we see stars then?".. Sigh..

The system used in the ATFLIR pod is a TMA. I explained why it is called an anastigmat, namely it has per definition NO aberrations.. You claim "because it is off axis, therefore we see aberrations", this is false.

I see your point @deirdre, and thanks for the heads up. I meant to say that it looks like we are going to move in a future where we cannot have normal (ok, old?) human interactions anymore, like kissing, touching or having plain fun. I foresee that this is going to happen. It is already seen...
