I have to use a mask in my work every day. I am an engineer and quite hands on as well. I can tell you that you start to hate this mask after a 9 hour shift. At least, I do.

I went over the manual of the Zeiss camera a couple of times already and I cannot find anything in the design that possibly might show this artefact in any optical sense. No tilting or panning going on. It is a very straight forward design, inherent to Zeiss. A possible window in front of this...

Another theory is optical coating delamination. For instance the AR coating on the glass lenses. But that we would see in every frame, not just this one, and it would appear blurry and unsharp. So this theory is valid, but unlikely.

Thanks Mick, indeed this is of course completely true (that refraction screws it up). I was too focussed on the technical optical/hardware part, should have mentioned the refraction. To get around the refraction problem, you would need to use wavelengths that are less affected by refraction...

I think it also does not help that clearly the (elderly) lady is not the largest person you will ever meet. And likely also the chairs are not gigantic. This all ads to the effect.
