Here's the Holsworthy to Hatherleigh road, which does indeed run due east most of the time. If they started in Holsworthy itself, Venus would have been to their left, and might have appeared to be somewhat north of east at first.

It is definitely in the low information zone. It could even be a bird, with a shadow under the nearside wing.

I think this is the sort of camera that only takes a series of individual shots, so the object/phenomenon is unlikely to appear more than once if it is moving fast. But that is a guess on my part.

I suppose it could just as easily be an insect flying from right to left, with a trailing abdomen.
