What's the Farthest Distance a Contrail is Visible at?

Not up there with some of the distances above, but this shot even shows the separation of the trails, and is taken from between 105 and 110 miles away: a Lufthansa MD11 north of Cardiff, taken from Hampshire.

Photos of Planes and Contrails (That you took yourself)

Sunset tonight. Lufthansa Cargo flight LH8221 (Dallas - Frankfurt, MD11, reg D-ALCB, 35,000ft), about to cross the contrail of easyJet flight U27145 (Liverpool - Palma de Mallorca, A319, reg G-EZGH, climbing through approx 34,000ft). And here's the same plane around 13 minutes earlier when...

Debunked: Look-Up.org.uk Alleged "spray pipes" on A-320 are Pylon Drains

I have a post in the works responding to this. The photos he shows of one of these "unlisted" flights appears to be a KLM Boeing 777 flying over London to Amsterdam. And Sunday April 12 had totally water saturated air at cruising height.

MH370: Report of Jet flying over Maldives Island Kudahuvadhoo

Well, unless you believe the claim that contrails from MH370 have been identified and confirm a turn to the southern Indian Ocean... https://www.metabunk.org/threads/claim-mh370-contrails-have-been-identified.6068/

Photos of Clouds and Skies (That you took yourself)

Very nice @cloudspotter. Reminds me that I meant to post this one from my week in Austria last month. A nice halo (and some rather threadbare tracked-out powder - it got better lower down!)

Photos of Planes and Contrails (That you took yourself)

Overhead at lunchtime, a British Airways E-190 coming in to London City from Venice (Italy, not Mick's old neighbourhood!) against a contrail/cirrus backdrop.

    A Single Thick Solitary Trail

And here is today's. Should be with you in about 20 minutes, @Marin B ! Although the track appears to be quite a bit further south than recent days.

    A Single Thick Solitary Trail

Click the clock icon in the top right. Looks like this flight was about 25 miles from you at its closest. That would still look fairly high in the sky. That flight seems to follow more or less the same path at roughly the same time, 2pm, every day. Yesterday's path was quite a bit further...

MH370: Report of Jet flying over Maldives Island Kudahuvadhoo

To a reporter from Sydney it probably is sleepy. But these aren't Robinson Crusoes living on a desert island. A population of 3,500 puts it just outside the top 10 largest settlements in the Maldives: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Largest_cities_of_the_Maldives

MH370: Report of Jet flying over Maldives Island Kudahuvadhoo

The Maldives is pretty near the top of the global list of mobile phone subscriptions per capita: http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IT.CEL.SETS.P2?order=wbapi_data_value_2013+wbapi_data_value+wbapi_data_value-last&sort=desc Even back circa 2006 it had around 85% penetration of mobile phones...

MH370: Report of Jet flying over Maldives Island Kudahuvadhoo

I find it surprising that none of these people took a photo of this very rare event. Mobile phones with cameras are pretty ubiquitous these days, and by Maldivian standards this is a well-populated island (3,500+ people and the capital of an administrative district).

    A Single Thick Solitary Trail

2:10pm in San Francisco would be 9:10pm UTC. That fits in with KAL11, which passed over just the other side of the bay a few minutes earlier. Were you looking in that direction? (Dublin is between Hayward and Livermore on the map, north of centre.) If you didn't check the app until a few...

    A Single Thick Solitary Trail

Yes that is perfectly possible. And that narrow range can be anywhere within the band of possible contrail altitudes. Just the other day I witnessed the same thing, with a single jet at 40,000ft leaving a persistent trail while lower jets were leaving short trails. A few weeks earlier the...

Earth curvature refraction experiments - debunking flat/concave Earth

That's a very good telescope. A person, say, 3 feet wide, at a distance of 33 miles, has an angular diameter of about 3.5 arcseconds. That's not far off the limit for ground-based telescopes at low altitude looking straight up, I would be very surprised if you could resolve something that size...

Racetrack Contrails and "Bizzare" Planes off the Yorkshire Coast

That screenshot was taken on April 6 at 7:03pm (BST). Past the one-week FR24 cut-off, unfortunately. I remember it turned to the south somewhere around Wiltshire and headed out into the Channel, but I didn't follow it past that. The reason I noticed it is it looked like it was going to head...

Racetrack Contrails and "Bizzare" Planes off the Yorkshire Coast

I took a very distant photo of it (which I think I deleted as it was blurry) and I must say it looked more jet-like than pictures of the Orlik I found. Now there's a conspiracy for you! :) Edit: here is the FR24 screenshot. Ignore the picture on this one, obviously. Ostensibly 038 is this...

Racetrack Contrails and "Bizzare" Planes off the Yorkshire Coast

Yes, that is much more likely (although there were rumours of exotic and secret engines being tested at Marne last year!) https://alchemyandaccident.wordpress.com/tag/marne-barracks/ Later on Saturday night, at around 10pm, people across Britain reported hearing loud bangs which experts have...

Racetrack Contrails and "Bizzare" Planes off the Yorkshire Coast

Yes, although they are based at RAF Scampton, in Lincolnshire. Looking at that FR24 track, it seems to originate from Marne Barracks, near Catterick. I thought that runway was no longer in use?
