What to do about the Flat Earthers? Debunk, or ignore?

Finally, I met my first real life flat earthers yesterday Well, they were almost flat earthers In that they seemed to be heading that way And were repeating certain things about Not being able to trust scientists or NASA And figuring things out for themselves But what was most interesting Was...

Growth in World air traffic 1970-present

This FAA page has a whole bunch of numbers about air traffic in the US for 2016. 15.6 million commerical flights handled by the FAA in 2016, or an average of 42,700 each day. In 2004 it was 28,537. Worldwide, flights topped 100,000 per day (37.4 million per year) for the first time in 2014...

Visualizing Flight Paths Above 30,000 Feet

I'm back in southern Baja now and staggered by the volume of traffic compared to previous years. I remember first being here 19 years ago and being annoyed because one day one plane flew over the mountains I was camping in - now there are spells when it's almost constant. Interesting that if the...

Explained: Unburned trees next to burned down structures as evidence of secret "energy weapons"

I've watched this thread with some amusement: a few months back, to try to prove a point to a diehard CTer, I put to him the harebrained notion that the California wildfires were part of some secret government conspiracy, thinking I'd chosen something that was beyond doubt 'as it appeared'...

Measuring the Curvature of the Horizon with a Level

Double weird. When I first looked it really appeared slanted; but I rechecked on my Slant Detector 5000 (TM) and it's not there now. Must be a bit o' that ol' Mandela Effect. ;)

A Side View of the Curvature of the Earth at Lake Pontchartrain

You could say that. Points are calculated every 1/50th of the total length of the line of towers and the curve is generated from that. So, in essence, it's a line of 51 towers - but you'd also be able to see where towers in between those towers would be too. If that makes sense.

A Side View of the Curvature of the Earth at Lake Pontchartrain

Don't know what "slant range to a tower" means but x-axis is basically the line of towers you're looking at. In this case, first tower is 4 miles from the viewer, and each subsequent 'tower' (ie, 'marker') is 0.4 miles further along the line from that. Note: 0.16 miles is arbitary. It's an...

Measuring the Curvature of the Horizon with a Level

Weirdly, zooming in and overlaying a grid appears to show that the lighthouse is pretty much bang on vertical. And rotating the image so that the horizon is horizontal in the frame puts the lighthouse at a noticeable slant.

    Roy Moore yearbook signature faked?

To back this up you would have to look at all the photos and videos of the yearbook and find a consistent "chromatic difference" - which, as the other thread shows, isn't actually present. But, I mean, I'm sure everyone would fully endorse someone looking for it and presenting the evidence.

A Side View of the Curvature of the Earth at Lake Pontchartrain

SPOILER ALERT: This will seem totally mental to all but amateur geometry geeks who like pointless puzzles (and maybe them too). So I've been playing some more with the idea of left-right curves, etc, and seeing what happens if we 'isolate' the 'different curves' by making the earth a cylinder...

Need Debunking (Claim): Metabunk Curve Calculator Does Not Calculate for Angular Size

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to grok this sort of thing is to recreate it on a small scale: eg, take an object, measure the distance and apparent size, etc, and then move it further away from oneself and do the same. If we can see it working in the garden, we ought to be able to figure out...

    Roy Moore yearbook signature faked?

Here's another sample of Roy Moore's handwriting, from a 1981 note he wrote to a teenage girl he was dating: http://www.newsweek.com/roy-moore-liar-proof-alabama-senate-accuser-730851 This is a good one as it contains the "Roy" signature without the middle initial - matching the Nelson...

Visualizing Flight Paths Above 30,000 Feet

What an interesting thread. My main base is Baja California, Mexico, near San Jose del Cabo. I'd always assumed there weren't contrails because of the level of humidity and lack of traffic - but perhaps there aren't any flights above 30,000 feet either? I do actually know some people who live...

Dublin Moon and sun in same sky disproves Spherical Earth

From stackexchange: Yes and no. The “yes” part is that the dominant feature of the Moon's orbit about the Sun is that the Moon orbits the Sun with the Earth. Ignoring the Moon's acceleration toward the Earth, the Moon's acceleration toward the Sun is greatest now in early July when the...

    Observations of Pike's Peak

It's interesting that he does some half-decent background math and then when it comes to comparing his image he ignores any attempt at methodology and merely concludes "there's no way you should be able to see that." Strange also that he doesn't notice the massive difference between reality and...

A Side View of the Curvature of the Earth at Lake Pontchartrain

Wouldn't the circle of the horizon just confuse things? Because then you also have to work out the hidden amount, whereas calculating for towers that aren't hidden means just figuring out the two curves.

A Side View of the Curvature of the Earth at Lake Pontchartrain

Been playing with some cylindrical geometry, since that makes sense to me as a way to isolate the left-right curve. It was a bit roughshod, but seems to work. Where v is the viewer; t1 and t2 are towers; d is the distance from the viewer to the first tower; h is the height of the viewer, and...
