JoseMonkey - Geolocating for fun

Hey -

as Geolocation is often a key part of debunking I thought you might find this guy interesting - JoseMonkey (www.josemonkey.com) . He asks people to send him a short video from anywhere in the world and then he uses OSINT and GEOINT to find where they are. He has some good videos and always explains his method for finding people.

He has lots of videos on YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/@josemonkey/

He's also on Tiktok - https://www.tiktok.com/@the_josemonkey?_t=8eshYkPbcBt&_r=1

Two tools he regularly uses that I've seen on Metabunk before are OverpassTurbo and the Bellingcat OSM search tool, along with Google Maps, Streetview and GoogleEarth.

https://osm-search.bellingcat.com/

Here's some videos - I lost about an hour of my life scrolling through these last night o_O

Yeah that is good fun. Mind you there is a game on Ipad where you have to geolocate based on a streetview look, also fun.

It seems to be a skill that some have, and he certainly does. Thanks for the link.

It reminded me of an image, or caption, I had the misfortune of seeing as I was browsing the loonier fake news sites just last week whilst trying to debunk a claim made elsewhere. I was lead to a story which had a picture of, according to the caption, a "pretty Montana lass filling her gas tank at the highest ever prices" or some nonsense like that. Yet it was a Lukoil station, and sure enough, all the signs were in Russian. That jumped out to me within fractions of a second of seeing the image. However, someone was clearly unable to geolocate that photo to even the right *continent*!

Maybe she was across the border in Moscow Idaho, though it is closer to Wahington.
